📝 Exam time can be stressful for any child, but it may feel particularly overwhelming for autistic children.
Exam periods often bring changes to familiar routines, increased expectations and uncertainty about what will happen. Busy classrooms, bright lights, noise, time limits and the fear of making mistakes can add another layer of pressure. A child may appear more anxious, tired, irritable or withdrawn, or experience difficulty sleeping, concentrating or getting started.
Small, thoughtful adjustments at home can make exam time feel more manageable.
Try to keep everyday routines, including meals and bedtime, as predictable as possible. A visual timetable can help your child understand when study, breaks and other activities will happen. If plans need to change, provide as much notice as possible.
Studying in short blocks of 20–30 minutes may be more effective than expecting a child to concentrate for long periods. Include regular movement or sensory breaks, focus on one task at a time and set clear, achievable goals. A quiet study space with comfortable lighting and fewer distractions may also help reduce sensory overload.

It is equally important to protect time for sleep, preferred activities and genuine rest. Try not to let every conversation become about study or upcoming exams. Calm time with family can remind children that they are supported and valued regardless of their results.
Praise effort, persistence and the use of helpful strategies rather than focusing only on marks. Completing a study session, asking for clarification or recognising the need for a break are all achievements worth acknowledging.
Every autistic child is different, so the strategies that help one child may not suit another. Listen to your child and involve them in deciding what support feels useful.
If anxiety is significantly affecting your child’s sleep, eating, wellbeing or ability to attend school, speak with their teacher, GP, paediatrician or another member of their healthcare team.
